There are numerous functions of an office chair. Office chairs that are suitable for excellent support for your back are, for example, the Ahrend office chairs or the Giroflex office chairs. If you are going to buy an office chair and want to sit comfortably and have a good sitting position, it is essential to pay attention to several points of focus, because office chairs often have many different adjustment options. We have listed for you what to look out for!
See what suits you
Each office chair is adjustable in seat height. They also can have different functions of an office chair. The lever that controls the seat height is located on the right under the seat of the chair. This will raise or lower the entire chair.
An office chair can have a backrest that is adjustable in height separately from the seat. This is usually done with a rotary knob or a lever.
A large number of the office chair range has an armrest. In addition to the option of using an active seating solution, it is often desirable to have an office chair at your workplace.
When purchasing a good office chair, there is often more to it than you expect. For example, it is often first checked whether the office chair has a beautiful design and is good in the short term. It is also the intention that the chair fits within the style of the room in which it is placed. Based on the available budget, a choice was made for the long term. For example, the average office chair should usually last a considerable period of time.
When it comes to adjustable armrests, we distinguish three types:
- 2D armrest: height and width adjustment
- 3D armrest: height, width and depth adjustment
- 4D armrest: height, width and depth adjustment and also rotatable.
Some types of office chairs have lumbar support, which is a type of extra support in the backrest that makes it possible to adjust its curvature. Lumbar support can be adjusted in height and depth. Yet it is often not considered how important it is to have an office chair that is ergonomically sound. For example, an office chair should also sit comfortably for a longer period of time. It is annoying when a wrong office chair leads to an incorrect sitting posture. If you sit in the wrong position for a long time, this can result in physical complaints such as back pain, neck pain and shoulder complaints. This can be detrimental to both your job satisfaction and your productivity.
Four Types of Office Chairs
We distinguish four types of office chairs when it comes to mechanisms. When purchasing an office chair, it is essential to pay attention to this. It is about the movement or tilting mechanisms that ensure how a person sits on the chair and how dynamically one can work.
A static office chair is a desk chair in which the backrest and seat cannot assume any other angle and will therefore always remain straight. This type usually only occurs if the armrests are linked to both the seat and the backrest.
An office chair with a tilting back, the name already gives it away, has an adjustable backrest. However, the seat is fixed and is therefore not flexible and does not move with it. An office chair with a so-called rocking mechanism is a chair in which the seat moves with the backrest when it tilts backwards. However, the angle between the seat and the backrest always remains a static 90 degrees in this way.
The difference with the swing mechanism and the synchronous mechanism is that in the latter, the backrest and the seat move separately. The angle does not always remain 90 degrees, but it depends on how far you lean back. The office chair then follows your natural body movements. Synchronism is, therefore, the most common. It is estimated that this is integrated into 80 to 90 per cent of the office chairs.
Our Seating advice.
There are many things to look out for, and everyone will find specific types of chairs and machine heads more comfortable than others. These are the following tips that we have for you:
- A good chair should certainly be adjustable in height.
- The correct office chairs must have a depth-adjustable seat.
- An adjustable lumbar support is also beneficial.
Also, something you should pay attention to when purchasing an office chair is the wheels. Not every type of floor is suitable for all wheels. Do you have a hard floor? Then we recommend a chair with soft wheels. If you have a smooth floor, standard wheels will suffice. Soft wheels can also always be ordered separately. In short, pay attention to ergonomics and choose an office chair that optimally supports your body.
